What We're Doing in Club

It is our goal to dedicate a portion of every Regular Meeting to Bible study. Although the method of study may vary--games, activities, discussions, hands-on object lessons, audio or video presentations, worksheets, devotions, devotional series, Bible exploration, traditional Bible lessons, etc.--these methods all share the common goal of enlightening, educating, and enriching your child. The amount of time dedicated to Bible study may vary from meeting to meeting, and on rare occasions, the entire Regular Meeting may have to be dedicated to another activity, such as preparing for or participating in a mission project. But our goal is to provide your young person with frequent opportunities for learning and Spritiual growth, while also promoting Christian fellowship and involvement in the church and local community.

At the Junior High level, we will approach Bible study somewhat differently than it is approached in the younger clubs. We will "go deeper" into traditional Bible stories, uncovering some surprising aspects that may not have been apparent. We will focus more on application, teaching youth how to apply Biblical principles to their daily lives.

The purpose of the table below is to, as best as possible, keep you informed about some of the topics that we study in club, so that you can better discuss and reinforce these issues at home. Please note that this is not a complete list of all topics and issues discussed. Many more topics are typically brought up during the course of a Youth Group meeting, often during the dynamic group and interpersonal discussions that occur. In the Alpha Youth Group, we strive to teach your child both by word and by example, and to use the relationships we build with your child to be positive influences in their lives.

Study Format: video presentation/Bible exploration/discussion
Study Time: approximately 30 minutes
Britney Spears' song "Lucky" (from her album "Oops I Did It Again") is about a fictitious actress who seems to have everything one could wish for. However, when the cheering crowds are gone and she is alone, she is shown looking wistfully into her hand mirror, and lying in bed crying. During this lesson, we asked ourselves why the very people that we think should be the happiest people on earth are often the most lonely and miserable. We arrived at a common conclusion, that they don't know the source of true happiness. They're drinking from the fountain of materialism, which does not fully quench the thirst of their souls. We learned that only Jesus can fill the void within us and leave us completely satisfied. Although it is doubtful that Britney Spears herself knows the source of true happiness, her music video provided a great opportunity to discuss the emptyness that materialism can bring, and how Jesus can give us life more abundantly. Popular music often searches for answers to life's questions, but rarely provides complete, let alone Scriptural, answers. Popular songs such as "Lucky" that touch on these life issues can provide great "teachable moments" with our children, provided we step in as leaders and parents and help them discover the true answers to the questions that are raised.

How simple life would be if, each time God leads us in His will, we were spoken to in a loud thunderous voice, or his direction was accompanied by a burning bush. At least then we would have no question about what the will of God is in our lives. But unfortunately it doesn't always happen that way. Sometimes, you may very well hear God's will for you like Moses, in a loud thunderous voice. But most times, God speaks to us in a whisper, and it is not always what we want to hear. It is up to us to be sensitive to God's voice, whatever form it takes. We need to stop waiting for the burning bush. We need to listen closely, pray, and meditate on Him, in order to hear those soft whispers which often bear direction for our lives. But most importantly, we need to be open to the message. We might be expecting one answer to our prayers, but receive an entirely different one. We need to have faith that God will lead us in the right direction, and trust in Him with all our heart, and not lean toward our own understanding.

The question was asked, "Is our focus on the fish sandwich?" When reading the story of the feeding of the five thousand, are we so focused on the miracle that took place that we lose sight of the act of faith that had to occur for the miracle to happen in the first place? Typically, children's Bible story books depict a little boy gaving up his fishes and loaves of bread to Jesus to feed the multitude. This little boy could have kept a few for himself, or even refused to give up his food entirely. But instead, he gave all he had to Jesus, and a great miracle took place. The question was then asked, "Do we give everything to Jesus in our lives, exercise our faith in all we do, and pray for God to bless our efforts? Or do we sit back and wait for a miracle to happen?" It is important to note that before almost every miracle Jesus performed, an act of faith had to occur for the miracle to have even been possible. We are encouraged to step out in faith, and God will bless our efforts.
