A World Vision 30 Hour Famine poster greets participants as they arrive
The group participates in one of the first Tribal challenges of the famine--the Numbu Dance
As part of their 30 Hour Famine materials, World Vision provides a game called "Tribe". Similar to television's "Survivor", several tribes compete in challenges that illustrate the difficulties faced by those in improverished countries, such as Ethiopia and Nigeria. Following each tribal challenge, bonus cards are awarded to the winning tribes, and a discussion-based devotion is given that is relevant to the topic of the challenge. The tribe with the most bonus cards at the end of the famine got their meals first at the end of the famine.
Video games were a popular way to pass the time
The next Tribal challenge--cross the "lake" without falling in
The Kaputei tribe--Philip, Matt, Kelsey, and Brittany
The Matapato tribe--Jake, Nathan, Brooke, and Brianna
The Purko tribe--Ashley, John, Michael, and Shane
Among the materials World Vision provides to participating groups, identity cards give famine participants their new identities as needy children and members of various "tribes". Each identity card shows the child's new name, his/her picture, a detailed life history of the child, and any disabilities he/she may have. Many children in impoverished countries not only face hunger, but also disabilities such as blindness, deafness, the inability to speak, difficulty walking, or even AIDS. In the three tribal pictures above, several members are exhibiting their identity cards, as well as their various "disabilities". Identity cards are another way World Vision adds realism to the famine, making it "hit home" for the kids participating.
